People are hungry for healthier choices and the Better Food Movement is ready to serve. Everyone is craving healthy and locally sourced food options and this trend brings new food innovation opportunities. As a result, young entrepreneurs are revolutionizing the industry with new ways for consumers to get healthy food. On February 21st, 2018, the Second Annual Better Food Movement Conference united food disruptors by hosting local innovators and industry leaders who are focused on making healthy food readily available. Attending this conference were local entrepreneurs and brands that were looking to build new partnerships and expand their professional networks. Also in attendance were the future generation of culinary leaders from both local Miami high schools and students from Miami Dade College.
Gamechangers likeChef Einav Gefen – Executive Chef of Unilever, Shannon Allen – Founder of Grown, and Chef Allen Campbell – Author of the TB12 Nutrition Manual, shared their thoughts and educated us to inspire the growth of the better-for-you food industry. They gave their perspective on the new trends developing in the food industry and commented on how future leaders can continue innovating. The goal of their message was to plant the seeds of thought to shape the future of food.
Additional panels also included viewpoints from government and agricultural officials who shared what food startup funding programs are available to aspiring entrepreneurs, how to scale up those businesses, and about sustainability in farming. Chef James Tahhan from Telemundo and Leticia Pollock – Co-Founder of Panther Coffee, were among the speaker list for the conference and provided their thoughts on how food impacts our lives. One panel included popular local brands, such as My Ceviche and Pincho Factory, who recounted their experiences when beginning their business and offered advice to others who wished to do the same. The conference closed with the Better Food Innovator Awards, which recognized influential and growing food companies. The final session included a panel of judges with local representatives Alison Burgos – Founder of Seed Food and Wine Festival, Carlye Wisliceny – Marketing Field Associate at Whole Foods Market, and Dr. Vivian Ray – Department Chair of the Miami Culinary Institute.
